Prayer Changes

Pastor Kevin Lewis

Have you every prayed for something so audacious, believed for something so miraculous, and felt like the thing you were praying for never got answered? There have been times when I have been praying for a miracle and then have been surprised by God’s response.

Recently my wife (Kali) and I were praying for God to bless us with a house, a place where we could take advantage of low housing prices and interest rates, as well as eventually grow with a family. We had sold our first home and moved into an apartment so we could have time to search for the perfect place. We had made enough money from the sale of our previous house to make a down payment on a new house. In addition to praying and believing God we hired a real-estate agent and began searching. This is when our lives began to rapidly change…

After months of searching for a home, my wife became pregnant with our baby girl. We were so excited and began to prepare for parenthood. Five months into her pregnancy we got a phone call that a newborn baby boy had been abandoned by his birth mother at the hospital. She had left without giving the hospital any family or medical history and she had decided to not take a medical ID number that could connect her back with the child should she choose to be reconnected. Kali and I were presented with the opportunity to be this boy’s new family. We were elated and said yes, thrilled and overwhelmed that God had blessed us with not one but two beautiful children.

Two months later we felt God calling us to take a huge step of faith and give away most of the money we made from the sale of our first house. We decided to obey God even though it meant we would temporarily be unable to purchase a home and would need to sign another lease on our two-bedroom apartment (which would soon house four humans and two dogs!). Eight weeks later my daughter was born, but upon delivery she was immediately taken from us and put in the NICU, as she was un-responsive. We needed a miracle, we needed God to heal her, open up her lungs and regulate her heartbeat. The next seven days were incredibly tough but GOD HEALED HER. Nine months later we were blessed with an opportunity to rent a house that is double the size of our apartment.

Why do I share this? Well, within two years of praying an audacious prayer God has blessed me with far more than I could have dreamed. I have learned that when I pray for God to change my circumstances, He actually changes me. James 1:5 says “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” Biblical wisdom is the ability to know and understand godliness and to do what pleases God. God grants wisdom to those who sincerely seek him and while our circumstances may or may not be changed, we are being changed. The more I pray and mature in my walk with Christ, the more I find my prayers to be less selfish and more about the things of God.

I want to leave you with a simple prayer that I pray everyday “God give me purity of heart and wisdom beyond my years.” Be blessed and keep praying!
