Ask Seek Knock

Pastor Dawn Jackson

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Matthew 7:7

Larry Walters will forever be known as “Lawn Chair Larry” after a bizarre weather balloon scheme he hatched in the 1980’s. Larry attached forty-five weather balloons to his lawn chair, grabbed some sandwiches, beer and a pellet gun, strapped himself to his chair and had his friends cut the anchoring cords. According to his prediction he would simply float a couple of hundred feet off the ground and lazily float over his neighborhood while he ate sandwiches and drank his beer. Instead he shot 16,000 feet into the air startling a couple of airline pilots coming into land at LAX. (Imagine radioing that information into the control tower.) After leveling off he sat cold and frightened while drumming up the courage to shoot some of his balloons so he could descend. When he finally brought his contraption down to land, he became entangled in power lines, which caused a black out in Long Beach. He was soon rescued and arrested. When asked by a reporter why he did it he responded, “A man can’t just sit around.”

While I do not condone Larry’s actions, I do love his response! In fact the Bible commends people who take initiative and have a persistent spirit. The NLT version of today’s scripture translates the verse this way:

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”

Keep on … keep on … keep on! Our job is not to sit around. We are called to be actively engaged; persistent in prayer; persistent in pursuit; persistent in opening new doors. Is there a promise you know God has spoken to you? Is there something you are believing God for? It could be any number of things. Perhaps it’s a promotion at work, or the opportunity to go back to school, or the ability to be debt free, or a healed body, or a restored relationship, or ______ (you fill in the blank). Don’t give up! Is there a prayer you can pray? Ask him! Is there an answer or opportunity you can look for? Seek it! Is there a door you should try and gain entrance through? Knock! Take the initiative and go for it. The best is yet to come!
